Michigan left tackle Grant Newsome's season is over, coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed Monday.
Newsome was injured during Saturday's 14-7 win over Wisconsin with a cut block to his knee and a further examination is coming. Harbaugh did not specify the injury.
"It'll be a tough couple weeks for him and a tough reminder how tough the game of football can be," Harbaugh said during Monday's news conference.
Newsome, a sophomore, had started every game this year. Harbaugh raved about his ability to handle it.
"As far as human being character, nobody has come through this university and football (so strong,)" Harbaugh said. "Leon and Kim Newsome, they should write a book on raising kids."
Newsome's future is in doubt. When asked if the injury could be career-threatening, Harbaugh didn't rule it out.
"It's as serious as a knee injury can be right now," he said. "A reminder how serious injury can be in football."
Harbaugh called Newsome "special," referring to his outlook and character.
"Being with him at the hospital, everyone he's come in contact with please and thank you," he said. "It's just amazing, he is an amazing young man. He is strong and knows all things are possible. ... He's got some things to work through right now. Handling it like a champ. I know he's got pain. Watching him out there, he's tough as a two-dollar steak. It's unbelievable."
Despite the injury and U-M bringing out a cart for him, he limped off the field with assistance.
The backup plan isn't clear. Harbaugh said Juwann Bushell-Beatty is "Plan A" after stepping in when Newsome was hurt. But he admitted Ben Braden could move from left guard or Mason Cole from center. If Cole moves, Patrick Kugler would be the center. Ben Bredeson could step in at left guard.
