Michigan football QB Wilton Speight transferring to UCLA

Wilton Speight has found a home for the final season of his college football career.

Speight, a former Michigan starting quarterback, will play at UCLA this season as a fifth-year graduate transfer. He confirmed the move via his Instagram account and he'll be eligible immediately. He also considered Wyoming.

Speight opted to leave U-M shortly after the 2017 campaign came to a close, a season shortened after a vertebrae injury he suffered during the fourth game of the year at Purdue.

He originally planned to find a home before the start of the January semester, but instead took more time while training on the west coast. The Free Press reported in January that Speight was, at one time, open to possibly returning to Michigan for a fifth season if the circumstances were right _ which head coach Jim Harbaugh later confirmed.

Speight helped U-M to a 10-3 record as a starter in 2016, throwing for 2,538 yards, 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He missed one game due to a shoulder injury, though he played hurt the following week in an overtime loss to Ohio State.

After beating out John O'Korn and Peters for the starting job in 2017, Speight saw his season cut short after the injury in a win at Purdue on Sept. 23. He went 44-for-81 passing for 581 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions during his four games with the Wolverines.

He has a clean bill of health and should be ready to compete with the Bruins once fall camp begins.

Shortly after Speight announced his transfer, Michigan snagged a commitment from Ole Miss transfer Shea Patterson. The junior is competing for the starting job with Peters, Dylan McCaffrey and Joe Milton this spring. Though as of now, it's still unclear if Patterson will be eligible for the 2018 season as he's still in the process of seeking an immediate eligibility waiver from the NCAA.
