Michigan comes up short at Purdue, 92-88

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. _ For the second time this month, Michigan gave the Big Ten's best team all it wanted.

But not quite enough.

Despite shooting 60.3 percent from the floor, Michigan blinked one too many times Thursday night in a fast-paced 92-88 loss to third-ranked Purdue at Mackey Arena.

For the game, Purdue shot 62 percent from the field and 55 percent (11 of 20) from 3-point range. In the second half, the Boilermakers went 15 for 24 from the field and 16 for 18 from the foul line, holding off Michigan.

Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman finished with a career-high 26 points to lead the Wolverines, who shot 13 for 23 from 3-point range. Zavier Simpson added 16 points, and Moritz Wagner finished with 15 points.

Purdue was led by Vincent Edwards' 30 points. Isaac Haas had 24 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots.

Michigan (17-6, 6-4 Big Ten) will return to action Monday when it hosts Northwestern at the Crisler Center.

Michigan made enough adjustments to Purdue's ball-screen switches, going 5 of 11 from deep and shooting 52 percent overall from the floor in the first half. The problem? Purdue's offense was better, as the Boilers went 16 for 26 from the field through 20 minutes and took a 41-36 lead into the break.

Despite Purdue's hot start again to the second half, Michigan had an answer, getting back-to-back 3-pointers from Wagner and Abdur-Rahkman, before Charles Matthews flushed home a dunk in transition to make it 50-49, Michigan, with 16:03 to play.

Both teams went through an intense offensive flurry, combining to hit 15 shots in nearly seven minutes to start the second half.

Finally, Purdue broke the back-and-forth trend, rattling off six straight points before stretching out to an 11-2 run for a 79-70 lead, with 5:19 left

Michigan crept to within four after five points from Wagner, but back-to-back turnovers slowed the Wolverines' momentum. Purdue got two free throws from Haas to make it a five-point game with 1:17 left. Michigan's final gasp, down five, came in the form of two missed free throws from Simpson with 17.9 seconds.
