A student at Central Michigan University shot and killed his parents in a dormitory after a "domestic" dispute early Friday, authorities said.
The student, James Eric Davis, remained at large Friday evening.
Illinois state Rep. Chris Welch identified the shooting victims as Davis Jr.'s parents. The school earlier said the fatal shooting "started from a domestic situation."
"Stay clear of Campbell hall! There were shots fired. Stay safe Chippewas!" the university posted on Twitter at 9:05 a.m. Friday.
Halie Byron said she locked herself in her off-campus house, a 10-minute walk from where the shooting took place.
"It's scary thinking about how easy a shooter can come into a college campus anywhere _ a classroom, a library. There's so much easy access," Byron said.
The suspect's father, James Davis Sr., 48, was a part-time police officer who had been with the Bellwood, Ill., police department since 1999. He was also a part-time officer at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Hines, Ill. The student's mother, Diva Davis, 47, was real estate broker, according to her Facebook page.
Campus police Lt. Larry Klaus said surveillance video showed Davis fleeing on foot.
The city of Mount Pleasant posted on Twitter that the suspect was considered armed and dangerous.
Davis was believed to have been released from a nearby hospital early Friday morning. He had been taken to a hospital by campus police because of a drug-related health problem, police said.
Klaus said guns are not allowed on school grounds, according to NBC News. "We have a gun-free policy on the campus," he said.
Friday was the last day of classes before spring break. Parents attempting to pick up students were asked to stay off campus.
More than 20,000 students attend the university.
