Michigan cancels open spring practice, Big House 5K amid coronavirus concerns

Michigan football's open spring practice on April 18, as well as the annual Big House 5K scheduled for April 19, have been canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The cancellation is only one of several precautionary steps taken by the athletic department in response to COVID-19.

The university released a statement on Wednesday regarding several measures that will be enacted from March 12 through "at least the end of Winter Term classes on April 21."

The measures affect in-season sports, such as baseball, softball and lacrosse, as well as football, which is slated to begin spring practices next week.

"All U-M home competitions will be played as scheduled with only student-athletes, coaches, officials, essential personnel and a limit of two family members per participant in attendance," the statement read. "Credentialed media and broadcast partners will be accommodated at games and encouraged to utilize social distancing."

Other measures include:

_ All single-game ticket purchases will be refunded by the ticket office on a rolling basis. The ticket office will be contacting all accounts that purchased tickets once refunds are processed.

_ All season-ticket holders will receive a partial refund for all affected games at the end of the season.

_ Practices for all teams will take place as scheduled, without the presence of non-essential personnel (parents, recruits, friends, alumni, scouts, etc.).

_ Non-championship competitions will not take place (volleyball, field hockey, men's and women's soccer).

_ Michigan also will not allow coaches to conduct off-campus recruiting activities and will not be able to host recruits on official or unofficial campus visits.

Other events that could be affected are the NCAA men's gymnastics championships, which are scheduled for Crisler Center on April 17-18, and the Collegiate Water Polo Association women's championship, scheduled to take place at Canham Natatorium April 24-26.

The university canceled all classes Thursday and Friday and will begin online classes Monday, lasting at least through the end of winter semester.
