Michigan athletic department reports new single-week high of COVID-19 cases

Michigan's athletic department reported a new single-week high for COVID-19 cases, with 26 positive test results between Oct. 17-23, the university announced Friday.

Of the positive results, 25 were from student-athletes and one was from a staff member.

1,576 total tests were administered between student-athletes and staff members this week.

In total, since the department began testing, there have been 13,734 total tests administered — 10,975 to student-athletes, 2,759 to staff members — with 131 positive tests (118 student-athletes, 13 staff members).

The increase in cases comes during the same week Washtenaw County issued a two-week stay-at-home order for undergraduate students due to a sharp uptick in cases at the university. When the order was announced, 61% of the confirmed and probable cases reported in Washtenaw County over the past week were attributed to Michigan students.

The order did not affect the football team, which will play its season opener at Minnesota on Saturday.
