As someone who saw the 14-year-old Michelle Wie compete against the some of the best male golfers in the world at the Sony Open in Hawaii and almost make the cut, this story in the Hartford Courant was both puzzling and sad.
Michelle Wie has failed to qualify for the U.S Women's Open.
Wie shot a 74 in the second round of qualifying Monday, and missed by one shot. The 19-year-old from Hawaii was competing for 30 spots at Woodmont Country Club, where most LPGA Tour players went the day after the LPGA Championship. It will be the first major Wie has missed this year.
Wie has played in the U.S Women's Open every year since she was 13. She had to qualify last year and then missed the cut at Interlachen.
It is ludicrous to write off someone with so much natural talent at such a young age ( especially as she is barely halfway through her first season as a full-time LPGA Tour pro) but every such setback for Wie is another dent in the belief of those of us who saw her back then and believed they had just seen the future of golf.
