Michelle Obama wants to see some good emerge out of the royal controversy.
The former first lady stressed the importance of family to “Access Hollywood” after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry voiced their issues with the British palace during an interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired earlier this month.
“My hope is that, when I think about what they’re going through, I think about the importance of family and I just pray that there is forgiveness and there is clarity and love and resolve at some point in time,” Obama told the entertainment TV show. “Because there’s nothing more important than family.”
During the interview with Winfrey, Meghan and Harry spoke about feeling unsupported by British officials before they stepped away from their senior roles last year and moved to California.
Meghan also said she was made aware during her first pregnancy that there were concerns within the palace about “how dark” their son Archie’s skin might be before his birth in 2019.
Winfrey shared on “CBS This Morning” after the interview that Harry said Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip weren’t “part of those conversations.”
The Queen has since addressed the highly publicized interview with a statement through Buckingham Palace.
“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan,” reads the statement released last week.
“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.”
Harry, 36, and Meghan, 39, are currently expecting their second child — a baby girl.
