Michelle Obama in London: Former First Lady has audience captivated with 'inspirational' talk

Michelle Obama took to the Royal Festival Hall stage last night for her much anticipated book tour appearance and, judging by Twitter, she did not disappoint.

Speaking to a sold-out auditorium of 2,700, which included 300 school students, Obama discussed her family, upbringing, black womanhood and path to the White House, as well as offering advice for young women.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie interviewed the former First Lady about her new memoir Becoming, in a conversation that audience members called “utterly inspirational”.

One twitter user said: “These remarkable women had the Royal Festival Hall so captivated tonight!”

Others praised her sense of humour and ability to hold the crowd enraptured.

Some expressed disbelief that they even managed to make it to the event, which sold out within minutes.

After the talk, Obama left the stage to a standing ovation, bringing an end to a “phenomenal” evening.

The Southbank Centre talk was the only appearance outside the US and sold out within minutes, with many begging for a larger venue or stream of the event.

She began the day with a talk at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School in Islington, which she visited nine years ago on her first trip to the UK as First Lady.
