Michelle O'Neill confirms she has tested positive for Covid-19

The Deputy First Minister has tested positive for Covid-19, it's been confirmed.

Michelle O'Neill took to her social media pages on Tuesday afternoon to announce she has contracted the virus.

Ms O'Neill, who is double vaccinated, said she hopes to return to public duties next week.

She said: "I have contracted Covid-19. I am thankful to have had two doses of the vaccine. I’ll remain in self-isolation, and hope to return to my public duties next week. Executive Office Minister Declan Kearney, will take forward Departmental business in the meantime."

Meanwhile, a public inquiry ordered in relation to serious concerns about the clinical practice of a hospital consultant in Northern Ireland is to begin next week.

Urologist Dr Aidan O’Brien retired from the Southern Health Trust last year.

The trust notified the Department of Health of concerns about his work, leading to the records of more than 1,000 patients being recalled.

Health Minister Robin Swann announced the public inquiry last year and had previously said it would be led by Christine Smith QC.
