Michelle Mone lets slip Celine Dion first dance plans ahead of wedding day

Michelle Mone has snubbed Whitney for Celine as she revealed details of her upcoming wedding to billionaire Doug Barrowman.

For her first dance, it’s no longer The Greatest Love of All for the ballad-loving Tory peer – who recited the classic in her cringeworthy maiden House of Lords speech – but Celine Dion’s A New Day Has Come.

Former bra boss Michelle, 48, who used to love belting out the Whitney Houston track, said the Canadian singer’s lyrics felt like they were written for her and Doug, 55.

She said: “When we met, we’d just invested in a tech company together.

“My life was just horrible at that stage, my personal life, and we became really good friends.

“My friends used to say, ‘Michelle, you’ve got your whole world in front of you – just smile and you’ll be fine’.

“I’d say, ‘Oh, but I can’t smile because of this or because of that’.

“My mum used to say, ‘Look, Michelle, you’ve got absolutely nothing to worry about.

"There’s families around the world that can’t put food on their table for their kids, there are families that have kids dying of leukaemia. You have got no issues whatsoever. So just get yourself together and shut up, basically’.

“There’s a song that reminds me of what everyone used to tell me and they used to say, ‘Michelle, a new day will come one day and you’ll be the happiest ever again’.

“And that’s Celine Dion’s song, A New Day Has Come, and the words – you would think that it’s been written for me.

“I know everyone out there thinks a song has been written for them but that’s the song that I think has been written for me.

“It’s a beautiful song and I think that might be our first dance as well.”

Mum-of-three Michelle, who alongside her ex-husband Michael founded her Ultimo brand, was due to tie the knot with fiance Doug in a £1.5million wedding in May.

They had planned a lavish ceremony at the Palace of Westminster but the coronavirus pandemic forced the couple to postpone it.

Michelle was made a life peer by former prime minister David Cameron in 2015. But she was mocked for her first speech about Whitney’s cover of The Greatest Love of All.

She told the House of Lords: “I normally sing this at karaoke but, on the advice of our wonderful doorkeepers, I thought I would spare your Lordships’ ears – I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way.”

The businesswoman, who had a bitter divorce from her first husband, revealed her choice of wedding song while speaking to host Laban Ditchburn on the Become Your Own Superhero podcast.

A New Day Has Come was released in 2002 and reached the top 10 in Canada and Europe.

In May, we told how Mone celebrated what should have been her wedding day by posting pictures from her four hen parties.

She marked the day by chatting to pals and family in video calls and looking through the photos.
