Michelle Heaton says she's 'nervous' as her first sober Christmas approaches

Michelle Heaton opened about how 'nervous' she has been feeling as she prepares to celebrate her first sober Christmas.

The 42-year-old had spent six months at The Priory for her drug and alcohol addictions earlier this year. When she was at her worst, the former Liberty X singer would be downing two bottles of wine, a bottle of vodka and snorting cocaine each day.

And now, the star made an appearance on Lorraine to discuss how she felt about the upcoming festive celebrations.

She explained: "I'm almost eight months sober and I'm coming into celebrating Christmas for the first time without an alcoholic drink in my hand.

"I'm really excited and a little bit nervous. I'm really excited to understand how others keep the joy in their lives without alcohol this year."

The star went on to say how the last eight months have been a 'real journey of sobriety' for her, but she is still incredibly happy.

"I couldn't get to eight hours without picking up the drink towards the end, and here I am almost eight months clean and sober," she added.

She went on to remind people that 'alcohol isn't always that glamorous' before remembering herself at 'rock bottom'.

Michelle told Lorraine Kelly: "I was so unkind to people and myself, but now I'm sober I have that second chance.

"That small change can make all the difference, make this Christmas count."

The star - who shares children Faith, nine, and Aaron, seven, with husband Hugh Hanley - recently admitted that she is still suffering health issues as a result of her addictions.

She told OK! magazine: "I still suffer from problems with my pancreas and have to take medication, but my liver is fully repaired and I’m really healthy."

Mum-of-two Michelle explained how she can now enjoy food again and finally has a sleep routine as she is no longer “walking around in a haze”.

At one point she was scared to go sleep as she was “afraid of not waking up” – but things are different these days.

Her recovery includes being a regular at Alcoholics Anonymous sessions, with the star also following at 12-step programme as well as attending drug counselling sessions.
