Michelle Heaton left 'at death's door' by alcohol addiction before life-saving stint in rehab

Michelle Heaton was at 'death's door' and at the mercy of her alcohol addiction prior to her life-saving stint in rehab.

The 42-year-old, most famous for being a member of Liberty X, checked into The Priory at the end of April with sources claiming she'd been struggling with lockdown and a number of health issues and had been using alcohol as "a crutch" to get through it.

After completing her treatment, Michelle posed with husband Hugh and the couple's two children AJ and on the steps of the famous rehab facility and credited it for giving her 'a second chance at life.'

The Gateshead born star talked about her addiction and how she's overcome it on Wednesday's Loose Women.

Speaking to host Kaye Adams, she said: "It's the first step and it's the hardest step to admit that you have a problem.

"I became very very ill and about five years ago it got a hold of me, but I was happy in my addiction."

Revealing how bad things got, Michelle, who reunited with her Liberty X bandmates at Durham Pride at the weekend, explained: "It's always very difficult to say, 'I’ve got a problem', because it is fun. But it got a hold of me really badly about a year and a half ago.

"I was sick to drink more. I would make myself sick to drink more. I’d be happy when I was sick because I could drink more.

“It got so out of control that it controlled everything that I did.”

Michelle took to Instagram after her Loose Women interview to thank the show, writing: " Today, You made me feel comfortable when I was nervous, happy when I felt sad and at ease when the anxiety hit me, like It does most days.

"Alcohol and drug .. ALL addictions are mind altering, life shattering, sometimes life ending.. I became to the mercy of my addictions, with no way out. Or so I thought.

"There is help for the still suffering addict, there is light at the end of the tunnel, there is life away from this disease. I can promise you."

She ended the post with the poignant line: "If you can admit you are powerless to this disease scream don’t shout."
