Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh's age, career, wife, children and more info about the GAA legend

Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh is set to light up The Late Late Show this evening - just a few weeks after celebrating his 90th birthday.

The Kerryman, born in Dingle, is synonymous with the GAA having first commentated on a match for RTE all the way back in 1949.

Ó Muircheartaigh got his break when he was one of eleven students who performed a test commentary on a hurling match in Croke Park.

Impressing with his anecdotes about UCD goalkeeper Tadhg Hurley whose siblings he knew from their holidays in Dún Síon in Kerry, Ó Muircheartaigh would go on become one of the most instantly recognisable voices in the country, while combining his job as a teacher in both primary and secondary schools.

Adding his unique qualities to GAA matches for over 60 years, the fluent Irish speaker called time on his commentating career in 2010.

Ó Muircheartaigh went viral in 2015 for his using his soothing tones to demonstrate how to make the perfect ham sandwich.

The 90-year-old has been married to Helena, who he has previously described as "a bit younger" than him, for an incredible 50 years.

Speaking about how he proposed to the love of his life, he revealed that he did so "bilingually", in the Downshire Arms Hotel in Blessington, Co. Wicklow.

The couple have raised eight children together.
