Micheal Martin says he believes there should be a general election after Easter 2020

Micheal Martin said on Friday that he believes there should be a general election after next Easter.

The Fianna Fail leader said that the Dail will return from the Christmas break in January and wind down in the weeks in the run up to Easter.

Mr Martin RTE’s News at One that his party has “given stability” to the country in recent years but he insists it is now time for a change of Government.

He said: “The spring session will commence around the 15th or 16th of January.

"There’s 34 days to have an orderly wind down... Easter to me is the natural cutoff point of this Dail.

“I think Fianna Fail have demonstrated a constructive approach, we have given stability to the country in the context of a no deal Brexit.

"We have given a functioning government when we didn’t have a majority ourselves after the last general election.

“We do believe there should be a change of government. We do believe this Government has failed in health and housing but we believe there should be an orderly wind down and after Easter should be the right time for a general election.

Mr Martin said that his party will be trying to get vital legislation passed before in the run up to Easter.
