Micheal Martin notes 'phenomenal achievement' as Ireland reaches latest vaccine milestone

Taoiseach Micheal Martin has said this week has been the most successful for vaccinations so far in Ireland's rollout.

Speaking at government buildings today, he confirmed that 330,000 vaccines will have been administered by the end of the week - reaching the latest target of 3.5 million doses.

Before the weekend is out, two-thirds of the eligible population will have received their first dose while one-third will be fully protected from the virus after receiving their second.

"This current week is the biggest week in terms of the administration of vaccines with 330,000 being administered”, he said.

"I think it's a phenomenal achievement.

"Over the weekend 3.5 million vaccines will have been administered in this country [to date].

"We also have the highest rates in terms of participation rates in the different age cohorts, which I think is giving us an edge in terms of protecting society from the virus."

Meanwhile, HSE Chief Paul Reid also took to Twitter to spread some more good news as Thursday marked the highest number of doses given out in one day - 58,000.

He also said that hospital admissions are down to 52 and just 18 people remain in the ICU for treatment.

The HSE plans to open the online vaccine registration portal for people aged 35-39 from this Sunday.

In its usual staggered format, those aged 39 will be able to register from Sunday, June 20, those aged 38 from Monday, June 21, people aged 37 from Tuesday, June 22, and so on.

Officials advise that once you have submitted your details on the portal, appointment information will come within three weeks.

Those who register will be sent to a HSE vaccination centre and will be receive either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.
