Michael Beale reveals Rangers' 'three simple rules' as coach opens up on the 'glue' that holds team together

Rangers coach Michael Beale admits the secret to Rangers' style of play is simplicity of message.

The former Liverpool and Chelsea coaching guru has overseen, alongside his manager Steven Gerrard, a steady evolution of Rangers' play since they arrived at the club in 2018 and while personnel has changed considerably, the basic principles they established early on are relatively unchanged.

Beale readily admits that everything he does on the training field is always centred on the manager's streamlined idea of how the game should be played.

And that is boiled down to three simple rules centred on dominating the space on the field, retaining possession and being aggressive in both boxes.

Talking to the Gold Dust football coaching podcast, Beale details the ultimate simplicity of what can look highly complex and revealed the four factors that act as glue to bring everything together and make a winning team.

He said: "We have real clarity to everything we do and it leads to how we want to play.

"If you come to watch our staff work it's not like 'What's the theme of today?'

"The theme is always the style that we are.

"We have some very simple rules.

"We want to own the pitch, we want to own the ball. We want to dominate the penalty boxes. Three really simple things but underneath those categories there are loads of little bullet points.

"We know how to own the pitch, we know the areas we want to protect, we know the areas we want to work, we want the line behind to manage the line in front, we want the line in front to block for the line behind.

"So there's lots of little things. People think it's so complex.

"Simplicity - If you want people to have clarity then you have to keep it simple.

"Then you have to ask what brings it all together, what's the glue?

"Motivation, fitness, togetherness, the sense of the common cause. That's the glue that brings all these ideas together."
