After a hasty last-minute rewrite the prime minister delivered his keynote speech to the Conservative party conference. David Cameron spoke for just under an hour and told the country that things were tough, but they'd get better.
Watching in the arena was Michael White who spoke to delegates as they filed out, cheerfully heading back to their constituencies. He heard from the justice secretary Ken Clarke who compared the performance favourably with Bill Clinton and (whisper it round here) Tony Blair.
