Michael White's conference podcast: Labour's quest for renewal

Labour party members meet in Liverpool this week for an annual conference that marks the first year of Ed Miliband's leadership.

Michael White takes to the conference floor to ask delegates how the party can renew itself in time for the next election (still likely to be more than three years away).

Rosie Winterton
, opposition chief whip, says that counter-arguments to the government's economic policies will take centre-stage.

But Peter Kellner, president of the YouGov polling company, says that Labour's message is not getting through to voters and that the party would be well advised to delay announcements of detailed new policies.

Already this week Ed Milband has announced an intention to cap student tuition fees at £6000 (as opposed to the government's £9000). Among Labour-supporting students in Liverpool, the policy received a muted welcome.
