Michael White's Conference Daily: Vince Cable attacks 'City spivs'

On the final day of the Liberal Democrats' annual party conference in Liverpool, the business secretary, Vince Cable, told delegates that competition rules needed to be reformed - and that he still supported a tax on mansions.

The speech went down well with delegates in the hall and Cable remains one of the party's most popular figures.

Simon Hughes, deputy leader of the Lib Dems, endorsed the business secretary's words. He tells us he had no regrets about joining up with the Tories.

Also today, we hear from former Lib Dem leader Paddy Ashdown, who tells Andrew Rawnsley of his involvement in the tense negotiations that followed the general election in May.
