Ed Miliband told his party that a "new generation" at the top of his party would take the fight to the Conservative party. In a speech that stressed his optimism about the future, he told delegates that he would not oppose every coalition cut, nor would he support "irresponsible strikes".

Guardian columnist Jonathan Freedland said the speech, while impressive, "didn't soar". Meanwhile Polly Toynbee argued that it was a good start. Live-blogger Andrew Sparrow was less impressed. He says that Miliband's debut effort was forgettable.
