Michael Underwood's surprising career change from CBBC and ITV to school teacher

Michael Underwood shocked everyone when he announced earlier this year he had given up showbiz to become a teacher.

An instantly recognisable figure from CBBC and ITV, Michael may be best known for his hosting duties on CITV's Jungle Run.

But nowadays, he spends his days in the classroom inspiring the next generation.

Michael's entertainment career began with a six-week stint on CBBC show Whatever You Want in 1999.

Proving successful on the channel, Michael continued on CBBC until 2002, before switching to CITV.

It's here where he became a true household name, hosting The Big Band, Starfinder and most notably Jungle Run.

Come 2005, Michael had progressed from children's TV to mainstream, working as an entertainment correspondent for GMTV.

In the 2010s, the 45-year-old was also the face of prime time ITV shows including Let Me Entertain You and Surprise, Surprise.

Micahel didn't shy away from reality TV either. He competed on Dancing on Ice in 2009, after he broke his ankle in the run-up to the third show in 2008.

He also appeared on Celebrity Masterchef and Mastermind in 2012.

Some of Michael's later shows include Real Stories with Ranvir Singh, Good Morning Britain and Do the Right Thing with Eamonn and Ruth.

However, Michael shocked the nation this year when he revealed he'd given up television to become a primary school teacher.

In June, Michael, who is married to Angelica Bell, was on This Morning to promote Chris Evans' 500 words writing competition for children.

Holly Willoughby and Phil Schofield were shocked to see him do a piece-to-camera from the classroom.

It was then Michael revealed he was no longer part of the entertainment industry, and instead works with as a teacher.

He told Holly and Phil that when work was drying up, rather than sitting at home and waiting for the phone to ring, he thought he would be proactive and use his teaching degree.

Michael works for the Surbiton High Boys' Preparatory School in Kingston upon Thames.

But he hasn't quite given up everything in the media industry.

Michael announced in August he was joining Virgin Radio Groove to present a show at the weekends between 10am and 2pm.
