Michael Stewart urges incoming Celtic chief Dominic McKay to sell his vision as 'apathy' grips Hoops support

Pundit Michael Stewart insists incoming Celtic chief executive Dominic McKay may have to reveal his summer overhaul plan soon.

Huge changes are in the works at Celtic Park with Peter Lawwell making way for McKay, while Neil Lennon's future remains under review and a host of players look set to leave Glasgow's east end.

With attention now to turning to season ticket sales in the midst of a pandemic after a disappointing Premiership campaign, Stewart reckons a plan must be put forward to convince Hoops' fans.

Former Hearts star Stewart believes McKay may have to step up and put forward his strategy sooner rather than later while keeping supporters in the loop is essential.

He told BBC Sportsound: “There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the club.

"It’s quite obvious they are going to have to be making substantial plans for change over the summer, with the work happening behind the scenes, but fairly soon there has to be some sort of statement or presentation of what the intention is going to be moving forward.

“Now whether that’s Dominic McKay who is coming in to sell his vision [and] to make sure the fans and everyone who are connected with Celtic has an understanding of what is going on, because the season that has unfolded has been shambolic, really.

“Clearly there is going to be change because Peter Lawwell is moving on. There is a number of players, either loanees or guys that are going to be sold, or others that maybe want to move on as well. So there is going to be a big turnover.

“Then potentially the manager as well. Fairly soon somebody needs to talk about what the club is going to be looking like next season.

"You look at Celtic’s season and it’s a massive what if. Rangers have been incredibly good form throughout, but Celtic have just shot themselves in the foot.

“If you look at the Rangers game after the turn of the year, they lose that and only win one of their next five games. They are 15 points behind just now, but even with that defeat to Rangers, think of the number of dropped points in there.

“Three draws and a defeat; that’s nine points they have dropped in the proceeding five games. There you go. Can you imagine if they’d picked up maximum points? They’d be six points behind with two Rangers games still to go.

“So I think that shows you the folly of the Dubai trip. That’s even before you take into consideration the calamity in October, this was just in January.

"Not only that, the momentum that was lost and they can’t catch up on games to apply pressure to Rangers.

“The whole planning of this season so far has been poor.

“This is the point I’m trying to make for next season. They have to sell a vision fairly quickly because the fans have got to buy into that. At the moment I’d imagine there is a feeling of apathy.”
