Michael Stewart skewers Craig Levein BBC comments as he reopens war of words with former Hearts gaffer

Pundit Michael Stewart has slammed comments made by former Hearts manager Craig Levein as deflection from his ill-fated Tynecastle reign.

Levein left the club second-bottom on goal difference alone after a loss to St Johnstone cost him his job at the end of October - although he would stay on sharing sporting director duties with assistant Austin MacPhee.

The Jambos never recovered and look set to be relegated from the Scottish Premiership, barring any reconstruction proposals that would keep them up.

Levein left Hearts completely at the start of the month and the boss delivered his assessment of his third spell in Gorgie after serving the club for most of his playing career and returning as manager for the first time between 2000 and 2004.

But Stewart, who was signed by Levein in his first spell as gaffer, blasted comments made on the BBC's Scottish football podcast as him taking "zero responsibility".

On Twitter, Stewart began by quoting from Levein's interview: "'People don’t like what Scottish football is at the moment so we’ve got to do something to improve the product'

"If only this man could be in charge at one of the biggest clubs to enact that improvement!

"Deary deary me! If only someone could maybe have posed that to him...

In a second tweet, he once again began by quoting Levein.

He wrote: "'I do believe the unprecedented run of injuries was the problem and I do believe if I’d still been in charge and the key players came back things would’ve kicked in again, BUT I DIDN’T GET THAT OPPORTUNITY.'

"Man takes zero responsibility ever. An incredible ability to deflect.

A third post also followed the same format with Stewart pointing out that Levein signed the players who he claimed were not showing enough character.

He wrote: “'Players don’t like to take responsibility ... I felt like there wasn’t enough character in the team'

"This guy signed them. But wasn’t his fault.

"Finally he claims to be a huge supporter of giving youth an opportunity, but when you sign so many players like he has that simply tells a different story and his style of football is so bad that it really wouldn’t help any young players develop."
