Michael Stewart reveals muted BBC microphone as Neil Doncaster sails through grilling

Controversial pundit Michael Stewart has revealed that he was unable to interject during a live BBC interview with Neil Doncaster after his microphone was muted

The interview took place on Sportsound this afternoon with host Richard Gordon asking the questions.

But fans took to Twitter to criticise Stewart's lack of contribution to the discussion that has been dominating the news agenda.

The former Hearts star explained his inactivity was down to an agreement that had been reached with the SPFL chief that would see him probed by Gordon alone.

He said: "To be clear the microphone was muted and the agreed format was for Richard and him to have dialogue."

The agreement is in stark contrast to what took place when SPFL board member Les Gray appeared on the show in recent weeks.

The Hamilton chairman fielded questions from the entire panel during a lengthy grilling on the crisis currently engulfing Scottish football.

Doncaster has received praise for a confident performance where he thoroughly and meticulously explained his organisation's position on their failure to agree loans to clubs.

The chief executive was responding to a BBC article that claimed there is evidence in past BBC accounts of loans being given to Motherwell and Partick Thistle in 2017.

Doncaster is adamant that these were 'advance payments' rather than loans and cited three ways where the two cash delivery mechanisms differ.

The league claims advance payments are subject to VAT and invoiced while loans are not.

They also point out that loans have to be repaid while that's not the case with advance fee payments.
