Michael Stewart on the standout Rangers factor that sets Steven Gerrard’s champions apart from past Ibrox greats

Michael Stewart believes it’s Rangers’ exploits in Europe that set the current crop aside from Ibrox greats of the past.

Steven Gerrard will lead his team into the Europa League last 16 on Thursday after delivering the club’s first Premiership title since 2011 this weekend.

They face Slavia Prague having already comfortably seen off Royal Antwerp in the round of 32.

Stewart has been mightily impressed that the root and branch overhaul conducted following Gerrard’s arrival has now bore domestic fruit, but maintains those continental endeavours are the most impressive thing of all.

He told BBC Sportscene: “When you look at what Rangers have done in Europe, and it’s not in a defensive sense as they’re playing teams off the park, the collective unit they have now would go challenging as strong as what’s gone in the past.

“I think that European thing is what really stands out.

“It was a huge task he was undertaking when he went into Rangers and when you look at the club as a whole, there’s synergy between all the departments.

“When you look at the recruitment, the structure that’s been put in place behind the scenes, Steven Gerrard’s management team - and it is a team - plus the team in unison together, you’re seeing the result of that on the park.

“It’s a team that knows exactly what’s expected of them, the style of football they’re playing is a joy to watch for Scottish football fans.

“Folk who want to see good football, they’re seeing that now.”
