Michael Stewart in Celtic penalty verdict as he tells Odsonne Edouard what he should've done to win a spot kick

Pundit Michael Stewart believes Odsonne Edouard shouldn't have had a penalty against Rangers.

But he reckons the outcome could've been different if the striker hadn't stepped over Borna Barisic's challenge.

Edouard was booked by referee Willie Collum during Sunday's 1-1 draw at Celtic Park after going down in the penalty with his side a goal to the good.

Interim Celtic boss John Kennedy insisted Barisic made contact with Edouard, a claim Stewart and fellow pundit Neil McCann disputed in the aftermath.

Stewart does, however, maintain the Croatian's challenge was reckless and could well have led to a spot-kick.

He told BBC Sportscene: "No penalty, correct decision.

"Neil's right. I'm laughing because John Kennedy is saying there's a slight touch.

"There isn't a touch, there's no touch. But he's absolutely spot on in that it's reckless from Barisic.

"Barisic runs a massive risk. If Odsonne Edouard simply runs forward without lifting his leg, it's a penalty all day long.

"I can't understand why he steps over Barisic's leg here, just step into it.

"If he steps into the tackle, nobody is going to be talking about, 'oh, he's dived there' or whatever, because he's getting wiped out.

"You see Barisic is lunging in there, just step into the tackle. Nothing like throwing your leg out to make contact - Barisic is right in front of him."
