Outspoken pundit Michael Stewart has questioned how Rangers could be in a position to sign Ianis Hagi after previously posting losses and having players defer their wages during the coronavirus pandemic.
The 21-year-old Romanian is expected to seal a £5m move to Ibrox in the weeks ahead after completing a successful loan spell from Genk.
Ibrox chairman Douglas Park recently explained in a Q&A with Record Sport that a £10m funding gap for the upcoming season has been filled by existing directors and further investment is on the way.
Hong-Kong based investor Stuart Gibson was on the verge of a reported £20m cash injection before the COVID-19 pandemic threw the world into chaos.
But Stewart wonders how Rangers can muster such a large fee by Scottish standards in the context of recent events, including a wage deferral during the lockdown months.
He said on Twitter: "I see some media reporting that Rangers are closing in on a £5m signing of Hagi.
"Can anyone explain how the club lost £11m, was needing £10m to see the season out, then Coronavirus hit and has deferred huge amounts in wages but can be linked with a £5m signing?"
