Michael Sheen stops performance to ask audience member to switch off phone

Theatres have been one of the hardest hit since the pandemic, and those most passionate about attending have been so excited to get back. One of those people is Welsh actor Michael Sheen.

For some lucky theatre-goers, they managed to get tickets to see him perform in London at the National Theatre.

However, those attending a recent matinee performance of Dylan Thomas' Under Milk Wood saw the performance halted after Michael was forced to break character and address the audience.

Unfortunately, as reported on a theatre blog, an audience member left their phone on throughout the performance. The phone in question rang repeatedly, as well as loudly announcing each individual Facebook notification and text to those in the theatre.

After 45 minutes, five phone calls, and numerous other notifications, Michael felt he had to address the situation.

He said: "I'm asking all of you now to turn your phones off

"We haven't waited this long to be in a theatre to listen to your phones. Turn them off. I'll wait."

The relieved audience reportedly broke out into applause for the Welsh actor, grateful he had addressed the situation.

Michael confirmed this exchange later on Twitter. "I felt terrible for coming out of the play and breaking the illusion but it was happening so often I felt it had to be addressed as it was spoiling the experience for everyone."
