Michael Sheen denies claims he is Banksy after paying to protect street art in hometown

Actor Michael Sheen has been forced to deny claims he is elusive street artist Banksy.

Rumours spread when he paid thousands to protect a piece of street art in his hometown Port Talbot – though there are worse rumours to hear about yourself.

“People started to think it was me – ‘Michael Sheen is Banksy!’” he said and he joked, “Have you seen the art I’ve done? I thought it was my dad.”

The actor is at pains to insist he is merely a fan of the piece of art, which depicted a child playing in flakes of ash from a fire, painted on a steelworker’s garage just off the M4.

Michael got in touch with the man, who was understandably overwhelmed by interest in the artwork.

“People were calling from China and he didn’t know how to deal with it,” says Michael.

“So I helped a little bit with protecting it. We managed to get some Plexiglass.”

Meanwhile, Michael credits his curly hair with being the secret to his success.

The Last Train to Christmas star tells Alan Carr’s Life’s A Beach podcast: “My hair is the secret to my career - it can do lots of interesting things.”
