Michael Schumacher's close friend Ross Brawn says there is 'hope' the F1 star will make a full recovery

One of Michael Schumacher’s close friends says there is “hope” the F1 driver could recover from his debilitating ski accident.

Schumacher was gravely injured when he hit his head on a rock while skiing in 2013, and spent 159 days in a coma before moving to a rehabilitation clinic built into his Swiss home.

But Ross Brawn, former motorsport engineer and Formula One team principal, who is a close friend of Schumacher, told The Mirror there is still hope he could make a recovery.

He said: “I do keep in touch [with Schumacher’s family] but we try and keep a balance of going to see him against calling, and not being a pain.

“I’ve been to see him a few times; Corinna, his wife, calls me occasionally and keeps me updated.

“We just keep praying every day that he’ll recover to a stage where… it’s slow, but there’s always hope.”

Brawn was the technical director for the Benetton team when Schumacher won his first two world championships, between 1991 and 1996, before the pair defected to Ferrari in 1997.

Earlier this year, Bernie Ecclestone admitted that he “can’t” visit Schumacher in his current state.

“I don’t want to see Michael like that,” he told Fox Sports.

“I remember Michael as he was. That is how I want to see Michael. If he comes back, that’s how I want Michael to be.”
