Michael Schumacher continues to live with 'consequences' of skiing accident

Michael Schumacher continues to live with the "consequences" of the skiing accident he suffered eight years ago, according to a close friend.

Motorsport boss Jean Todt said he hopes the seven-time Formula One world champion will continue to "slowly and surely improve" in his recovery.

Schumacher was placed in a medically-induced coma for six months after suffering a head injury while skiing in the French Alps in December 2013, reports the Mirror.

Following hospital rehabilitation, he was relocated to his home by Lake Geneva in September 2014, where he has been recovering ever since.

Updates have been rare with the family keen to keep Schumacher's condition private, but former Ferrari team principal Todt, on occasion, has been able to reveal glimpses into the German racing driver's recovery.

Speaking to German newspaper Bild, Todt said: "I've spent a lot of time with [Schumacher's wife] Corinna since Michael had his serious skiing accident.

"She is a great woman and leads the family. She didn’t expect that. It happened suddenly and she had no choice."

He added that Schumacher's son, Mick – currently in his first F1 season with Haas – "has a special place in my heart".

Todt's comments come ahead of the release of a Netflix documentary about the racing legend, with the support of his family, on September 15.

Manager Sabine Kelm said: "He is admired all over the world for his leadership qualities.

"He found the strength for this task and the balance to recharge at home, with his family, whom he loves idolatrously.

"In order to preserve his private sphere as a source of strength, he has always rigorously and consistently separated his private from his public life.

" This film tells of both worlds. It is his family's gift to their beloved husband and father."
