Michael Roberts waived by Lions after trade with Patriots is rescinded

A day after it was reported that the New England Patriots had traded for Detroit Lions tight end Michael Roberts, the trade fell through today. Roberts was waived shortly afterward.

Initial reports on Thursday said Roberts was headed to New England for a conditional 2020 seventh-round pick. There’s a possibility that he didn’t pass a physical, but no official word is out.

In the wake of Rob Gronkowski’s retirement this offseason, the Patriots continue to search for depth at the tight end position. The signed free agent Austin Seferian-Jenkins this offseason but released him this month amid reported personal issues.
