Michael Owen six word assessment of Man City penalty decision vs Liverpool

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has issued a blunt assessment on the decision to award Manchester City a penalty against Jurgen Klopp's side.

Mohamed Salah fired the visitors ahead from a spot-kick but Gabriel Jesus equalised with a well-worked goal at the Etihad Stadium.

The match could then have turned on its head entirely as City were awarded a contentious spot-kick late in the first half, though Kevin de Bruyne fired his effort wide.

Joe Gomez was the man unfortunately penalised for handball, falling foul to the new rules that have caused plenty of debate already in the opening months of the season.

Gomez could not do anything about the incident, with the ball effectively fired at him - a mirror image of another contentious penalty awarded earlier in the day for Leicester City against Wolves.

While others debated the ruling, discussed the 'silhouette' approach and whether Gomez's arm was in an unnatural position, Owen had a rather blunt assessment which he issued on social media.

Taking to Twitter, the former England striker stated: "These handball rules are utter b*******."

While the language was crude, it's difficult to argue with Owen and it's a point that is likely to be contested for the remainder of the campaign.

There has already been a frankly ridiculous amount of penalties this season and VAR, accompanied with the continued absence of supporters, has reduced the enjoyment surrounding the game.
