Michael Owen reveals Jose Mourinho's tactical mistake in Tottenham's loss at Liverpool

Michael Owen believes Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho got his tactics wrong in his side's 2-1 defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday night.

The Reds climbed above Spurs into first-place after the victory at Anfield, with Roberto Firmino scoring a 90th minute winner. Son Heung-min had equalised for Mourinho's side in the first-half, after Mo Salah's opener for the reigning champions.

It's a game that could prove pivotal at the end of the season in this really open title race and ex-Liverpool striker Owen has had his say on what happened on Merseyside.

The former England forward believes Mourinho was wrong to go for a 4-4-2 against the Reds - with Jurgen Klopp opting with his standard 4-3-3 formation.

Jose Mourinho press conference after Liverpool defeat

Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum and Curtis Jones made up the midfield trio for Liverpool, outnumbering Giovani Lo Celso and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for Spurs.

Steven Bergwijn and Moussa Sissoko sat either side of the midfield pairing, with Son and Harry Kane being the front two.

Owen said on Amazon Prime: “I think it was significant. All of the challengers would have been looking at that and thinking that a draw would’ve been a good result.

"If anything, maybe Spurs to win, but for Liverpool to win - the reigning champions - in the last minute, I think that would have been a dagger into the heart of a few teams watching that last night.

"It was a fascinating game. I thought Liverpool were absolutely brilliant last night in terms of possession, in the first-half, they didn’t create too many chances but I wasn’t sure of Jose’s tactics to be honest.

"They played a 4-4-2 and Liverpool had a spare man in midfield all of the time. In the second-half, Spurs had the best chances, and couldn’t convert and suffered a killer blow at the end.

"It’s a massive result for Liverpool, that one.”

Spurs are next in action on Sunday afternoon as they welcome Leicester City to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in another massive Premier League clash.

Liverpool, meanwhile, go to Crystal Palace for the early kick-off on Saturday afternoon, meaning Klopp's side could move six points clear of Spurs - for the time being at least - with a win at Selhurst Park.
