Michael Owen offers Frank Lampard verdict and makes Guardiola and Zidane comparisons

Liverpool legend Michael Owen has provided his verdict on Chelsea's decision to install Frank Lampard as their new manager.

The Blues have been without a boss since Maurizio Sarri left for Juventus following the climax of the 2018/19 season.

Sarri was heavily criticised during his debut campaign at Stamford Bridge but landed the Europe League trophy and guided the club to third spot in the Premier League.

Lampard has since been confirmed as Sarri's replacement after his three-year deal with the Blues was announced on Thursday morning.

The former England international has joined from Derby County, where he began his managerial career. Lampard helped the Rams to the Championship top six, with Aston Villa denying the club promotion in the play-off final at Wembley.

Owen, who played alongside Lampard during their respective England days, hopes that his former team-mate enjoys success back in London.

The former Liverpool star has compared Lampard's appointment with that of Pep Guardiola and Zinedine Zidane and insists that Chelsea could benefit from a similar 'risk' to the ones taken by Barcelona and Real Madrid.

"Every managerial appointment is a risk. Guardiola and Zidane are decent enough examples of clubs benefiting from taking a risk on unproven managers in recent years. Good luck Lamps, pave the way for more clubs to give young English managers a chance," Owen tweeted.
