Michael Owen makes Liverpool vs Southampton prediction

Liverpool legend Michael Owen has backed the Reds to see off Southampton at Anfield on Satutrsday but doesn't think the hosts will have it all their own way.

Jurgen Klopp's side are aiming to win their 24th Premier League game of the season against the Saints.

Their first league title in 30 years is all but wrapped up despite a large chunk of the season still to run.

Liverpool saw off Southampton 2-1 on the south coast earlier this season thanks to goals from Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has overseen a huge upturn in form in recent weeks with the Saints in the hunt for a Europa League spot, but Owen fully expects the host to have too much for them.

He told Bet Victor: "The Saints have won 69% of their points on the road so far this season (20 of 31) and Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side will provide Liverpool with another stiff test of their title credentials – but I think the Reds will take another step forward as they chase their first Premier League crown."

Since losing to Everton on November 9 Southampton have tasted defeat just three times in 12 league games.

Seven of those have been wins including ones at Chelsea and Leicester with Hasenhuttl hoping their away strip, which they will be donning on Merseyside, can help their cause once again.

"I think we had a few good journeys with our [away kit] yellow shorts," said the Saints boss.

"We go to Anfield knowing about Liverpool's record and the quality of their team but we don't play against their record, we play against 11 players and we want to show ourselves how far we have come, how competitive we are."

The stats though do not make good reading for the visitors who have not scored in their least three league games at Anfield while losing their last five on the trot against the champions elect.
