Michael Owen makes Liverpool Champions League prediction ahead of last-16 draw

Michael Owen has predicted either Liverpool or Manchester City will win the Champions League this season.

The Reds and City, along with Premier League rivals Tottenham and Chelsea , have progressed through the group stages of the prestigious European competition.

But it is last season's Premier League winners and the holders who have caught Owen's eyes.

Jurgen Klopp guided his side to the last-16 from a tricky group, which included Genk, RB Salzburg and Napoli, while Pep Guardiola had already seen his men through Dinamo Zagreb, Shakhtar Donetsk and Atalanta with a game to spare.

"I said last season it was going to be either Liverpool or Man City who wins the Champions League and I think it's going to be the same again," Owen told BT Sport.

"The Premier League is the strongest competition at the moment and Liverpool are that team who is stronger than anyone.

"Six months ago I thought it couldn't get any better. Winning the Premier League is the holy grail for Liverpool now but apart from that can it get any better?

"This is one of the best club teams we have seen in our lifetime. It's a phenomenal team and it's right up there with the great Manchester United sides, Chelsea under Jose Mourinho and Man City. It's just an unbelievable team."

Liverpool made sure of a place in the knockout stage with a 2-0 win over Salzburg - with Naby Keita and Mohamed Salah both scoring.

And it was Salah's exquisite acute angled strike which Owen dissected.

"It was all about the weight of the touch. If you take that touch too light the keeper will get it and if it's too strong the angle will be even tighter," Owen said.

"He took it to an absolutely perfect area where, yes it was harder but any stronger and it's impossible.

"Then you have to look at the speed that he's running at. Add to that it's on his right foot. It looks like he has got two or three yards to hit but he's really got a foot and a half with his weak foot and running at pace. It's phenomenal. That is off the scale."
