Michael Owen identifies the main 'problem' with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane at Liverpool

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen claims that Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are “not natural finishers”.

The Reds were left to rue yet more missed chances as they were held to a 1-1 draw with Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday.

Salah opened the scoring with a sublime goal in the opening minutes, but after that Liverpool failed to take any more of their opportunities. Mane had several chances to get a second goal for the home side, as did Salah and fellow forwards Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino.

In the end the missed chances proved costly as Newcastle equalised in stoppage time through Arsenal loanee Joe Willock.

Owen, who himself scored 158 goals for the Reds, says that Salah and Mane are not “natural finishers”.

"That's the problem: Mane, brilliant player, scores lots of goals. Salah, unbelievable player as well, scores lots of goals," Owen told BT Sport, during their coverage of Liverpool’s draw with Newcastle.

He added: "But they're not natural finishers, they're not someone that you can hang your hat on.

“They've scored goals consistently because Liverpool have, like today, created so many chances.

"But they've been wanting, or the team have been found wanting a lot of the season with missed chances."
