Michael Owen hits out at "b******s" handball rule after West Ham denied last-gasp strike

Michael Owen hit out at the "b******s" handball rule that denied West Ham a last-gasp equaliser at Sheffield United, while Declan Rice preferred to blame VAR.

David Moyes' side lost 1-0 at Bramall Lane to a second half strike from Oli McBurnie, but the Hammers thought they had equalised in stoppage-time when Rice teed up Robert Snodgrass to fire home.

However VAR judged that Rice had handled the ball in the build-up to the goal, before he'd passed to Snodgrass.

New rules brought in at the beginning of this season determined that the ball striking the hand of an attacking player at any point in the build-up to a goal would be penalised, even if the handball wasn't deliberate.

But Rice focused on VAR disallowing the goal after match, not the rule itself.

"We are fuming. All the lads are livid," Rice told Sky Sports.

"I've just watched it back. He has knocked the ball into my hand. If you are running with your arms like that with the rules as they are now it is handball but it is not intentional. It is a kick in the teeth.

"I think it is the thoughts of every Premier League player, not just me - pretty much every one doesn't want to have VAR in the game.

"There have been so many decisions this season that have been absolutely crazy. They were celebrating VAR like it was a goal and football should not be like that. We are not too happy but it is in the game now and we have to get on with it."

Former Liverpool , Real Madrid and Manchester United forward Owen was quick to condemn the rule for disallowing the goal, but not VAR itself.

"This new handball rule is an absolute joke," he tweeted.

"People will moan about VAR but that’s rubbish. VAR did it’s job. It’s the rule change that is b******s.

"Can somebody explain the rules to these people interviewing players. And to the players themselves. ITS THE NEW RULES, NOTHING TO DO WITH VAR. The new handball rules are crap but stop lazily blaming VAR for everything."
