Michael Owen disagrees with pundit about Manchester United vs Aston Villa score prediction

Manchester United will be looking to bounce back from last week's disappointing 1-0 defeat to Wolves when they welcome Aston Villa to Old Trafford in the third round of the FA Cup on Monday evening.

United, who have not faced Villa in the FA Cup since 2008, saw their eight-game unbeaten run come to an end courtesy of Joao Moutinho's low drive with less than ten minutes of normal time left on the clock.

The defeat, which was a first in charge for interim manager Ralf Rangnick, left United four points shy of the top four, meaning it is possible that the FA Cup will have to play second fiddle to their Premier League duties.

At the same time, however, United's players owe Rangnick and the supporters a much-improved performance after what happened against Wolves, with their display attracting a wave of justified criticism.

The visit of Villa, who will no doubt be buoyed by the arrival of Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona, offers United the chance to put things right, but it will be far from a straightforward task, with the Midlands outfit having already won at Old Trafford in the Premier League this season.

But how do the pundits think United will get on against Steven Gerrard's side?

Mark Lawrenson - BBC Sport

"I am going with Manchester United to edge out Aston Villa on Monday, although it is obvious from the stories coming out of Old Trafford that all is not right within the United dressing room," Lawrenson told BBC Sport.

"I hate seeing those sort of leaks because, although it could just be one unhappy player behind them, it can easily become an issue that undermines the whole club."

Prediction: United 1-0 Aston Villa.

Michael Owen - BetVictor

"He’s only been in the job for a short time, but pressure is on Ralf Rangnick," Owen told BetVictor. "Performances haven’t been good, and the club is desperate to win some silverware.

"Villa will be up for this and there's no way Steven Gerrard will play a weakened side here. United might, and I can see Villa edging this."

Prediction: United 1-2 Aston Villa.
