Michael Owen criticises Celtic's defensive record but says Parkhead European nights are "a huge occasion"

Former Liverpool and Real Madrid superstar Michael Owen believes Celtic have to shape up defensively to have any chance at all of competing in this year's Europa League.

The Celts entertained the neutrals and showed their attacking qualities in their 4-3 defeat to Real Betis last time out but their soft centre was once again exposed, reports the Daily Record.

Ange Postecoglou's men know they need all three points on home turf against Bayer Leverkusen if they are to have serious designs on reaching the last 16 of the revamped tournament.

But Owen sees fragility in a side who struggle for clean sheets but is backing the club's famous home support to once again rise to the challenge when the Bundesliga big boys arrive in Glasgow's east end.

Speaking ahead of the match for Bet Victor, he said: “It’s been a tough start for new Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou.

"They play nice football but concede far too many goals, as shown in that thriller against Real Betis.

"Celtic Park is one of the best places to play on a European night and this will feel like a huge occasion for those fans. I’m predicting a 1-1 draw.”

Meanwhile, the former England international is tipping his former team-mate Steven Gerrard to avoid defeat in Prague as the Ibrox side look to avoid a second consecutive group stage defeat.

He added: "Rangers are yet to hit their best form this season but are still dominating domestically.

"They played well in spells against Lyon at Ibrox in their first game but need to take their chances when they come.

"They’ve made the last 16 in the last two seasons under Gerrard though, so I fancy them to get a draw in Prague."
