Michael Owen and Paul Merson agree on Liverpool after 'embarrassing' Steven Gerrard claim

Liverpool will hope to continue in their fine run of form as they aim to win their fifth consecutive league game of the season.

Should Manchester City fail to beat Wolves, Jurgen Klopp's men could go top of the table with a win over Aston Villa.

However, Steven Gerrard's team have put together a run of good performances since he joined - winning three of their four games with their only loss coming to a narrow 2-1 defeat by Manchester City.

And ahead of the game, pundits have given their predictions of how they believe Gerrard's Villa will do against Liverpool.

STEVEN GERRARD: What Villa boss did when cameras stopped rolling after Liverpool loss

ANALYSIS: 'If watching a Steven Gerrard side is like this, Liverpool should want no part of it'

Michael Owen

"What a moment that was yet again for Liverpool’s super-sub, Divock Origi. He deserves a lot of credit, it’s never easy to come on and do well, let alone in crucial moments. There seems to be a really good atmosphere around the club at the minute.

"There’s only one place to start in terms of Villa, the return of Steven Gerrard to Anfield! Stevie has started his tenure in charge in a brilliant fashion and I’m sure he will be relishing this. He’s sure to get a fantastic reception, but I don’t think he will be happy after the game!

"Liverpool have a lot of momentum and look back to their best after a difficult season last year. I can see a 3-1 win."

Paul Merson

"Steven Gerrard will be a bag of nerves going back to Anfield because his team could get embarrassed.

"Gerrard has changed a lot at Aston Villa and got them pressing more, working harder and playing with high energy.

"But they are very inconsistent and if they start against Liverpool like they did against Leicester it could get embarrassing.

"Villa are playing a team here who can blow you away in a New York Minute and if they switch off at any point it could all be over very quickly.

"Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings are a good pair up top but the problem comes when everyone is fit and Leon Bailey, Bertrand Traore, Trezeguet and Anwar El Ghazi all want to play.

"I think they will cause Liverpool problems but I can't see them getting anything from the game."

Prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Aston Villa

Mark Lawrenson

"I'm not surprised Gerrard has had some good results with Aston Villa because he has given them new impetus.

"This is Dean Smith's side but training will have been different since Gerrard arrived and he has new ideas, plus a good coaching team working underneath him.

"Gerrard is doing really well as a manager and everyone is putting two and two together and saying that, if he carries on like this, he will be Liverpool's next manager. He quite possibly will but he always plays that down, which I think is good, because he is fully focused on the job he is in.

"I only see a home win here, though. The fact Gerrard is back will mean there will be a fabulous atmosphere at Anfield from the start, and that will work more in Liverpool's favour than Villa's."

Prediction: Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa
