Michael Owen agrees with two pundits on Tottenham vs Manchester United prediction

Manchester United are set to take on Tottenham Hotspur in what could prove to be a season-defining game for the club and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Amid mounting pressure on his Old Trafford future, the Norwegian has been backed, for now at least, after last weekend's heavy and humiliating 5-0 defeat against bitter rivals Liverpool.

Things don't get any easier for Solskjaer in the coming days, either.

Indeed, between now and November 6, this misfiring United team are set to tackle a challenging triple header against Tottenham, Atalanta and neighbouring Premier League champions Manchester City.

Here is how three top pundits think they will fare against Harry Kane and co on Saturday afternoon (5.30pm);

Mark Lawrenson - BBC Sport

"Solskjaer has got to make United difficult to beat. Forget any flamboyant football, for now, they just need to start being more solid," Lawrenson told told BBC Sport.

"With the players United have got, they are a counter-attacking team. They need to start playing like one, and soak up the pressure and play on the break.

"Don't give me spiel that just pouring forward is 'the United way', because the game has changed completely from those days. They need to build from back to front and give themselves a proper foundation.

"This is a tricky game to approach if you are a manager under pressure like Solskjaer is, but Tottenham are still quite scatty themselves, so it would not surprise me if United went there and won."

Prediction: Tottenham 1-2 United.

Paul Merson - Sportskeeda

"United have a way of finding results in games like these," Merson told Sportskeeda. "But if they do lose to Spurs and keep Solskjaer in this job, they aren't going anywhere, are they? They can't keep drifting along like this - it's already November.

"It isn't really [Cristiano] Ronaldo’s fault either, he isn't getting the service. He's non-existent at the moment - and he isn't touching the ball.

"If you want to keep him in the team, drop him back and play someone like [Edinson] Cavani or [Mason] Greenwood up front. Give Ronaldo the ball and get runners around him. I'd get Cavani in the team and give Ronaldo a free role.

"This is a must-win game for Manchester United. They just seem to find results in difficult situations and I think that's what will happen here. Manchester United are going to win this game and it'll paper over the cracks, yet again.

"They did manage a victory against Atalanta in the Champions League - and I think they'll pull off something similar this weekend."

Prediction: Tottenham 1-2 United.

Michael Owen - BetVictor

"It may be early in the season, but this feels like a season-defining game for both sides," Owen told BetVictor. "I don’t know what to make of Spurs. Every time they look like they’ve turned a corner they then put in a disappointing performance like last week’s against West Ham.

"As bad as United were defensively against Liverpool, and they were bad, they looked good going forward. They had some chances early on and they looked a threat. The confidence in the squad will be low and the likes of Ronaldo will be key in galvanising them.

"Both managers are under pressure here, particularly Ole. United won 3-1 here last season and are yet to lose in the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. I think they can edge this 2-1.”

Prediction: Tottenham 1-2 United.
