Michael Owen agrees with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over Man Utd's biggest problem

Michael Owen has slammed Manchester United claiming the team has no direction under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The former Red Devils striker was speaking after his old side were dominated by local rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford.

An own goal from Eric Bailly and a far-post flick from Bernardo Silva earned the champions a 2-0 victory which hugely flattered the feeble hosts.

United barely tested the City defence, with Cristiano Ronaldo ’s first-half volley the only chance of a note on another chastening afternoon for Solskjaer’s beleaguered troops.

The Norwegian’s position in the dugout will once again come under scrutiny, just two weeks removed from the 5-0 thrashing they suffered at the hands of Liverpool.

Solskjaer claimed his side have to get back to being a “proper team” hinting they have gone backwards from the end of last season.

“We’ve got to get back to what we started to look like. And we started to look like a proper team,” Solskjaer said to Sky Sports.

“Get back to what we looked like at the end of last season and the start of this one.

“We’ve been through this a few times, of course since the last game we played here [Liverpool] , it’s been a very difficult period. We’ve gone away from what we used to be.

“We need to be on the front foot more. I can’t look at myself and say this is how I want Manchester United to play.”

And Owen has backed up Solskjaer’s assessment claiming that the constant changes in personnel and formations show the muddled state United currently find themselves in.

“Manchester United have collected a fantastic array of players but they don’t look like a team whereas Pep Guardiola, whatever team he manages they’ve got a distinct style of play,” he told Premier League Productions.

“That’s what you look for in a manager and a coach is to put your impression on it.

“It’s a surprise that you turn up and with Manchester United you don’t know what formation they’re going to play.

“They are collecting a load of players, all these great players from around the world and they are chopping and changing all the time.

“You’ve got to be able to see further than the end of your nose and think this is the way we’re going to play no matter what. We are going to buy players for these positions and now let’s play this way.

“If things go wrong and you concede five against Liverpool you don’t think the defence is rubbish, let’s go and put one more player in there. It’s ridiculous.”
