Michael Owen admits it took a lot of 'stupidity and courage' to do The Masked Singer

Michael Owen has admitted performing on The Masked Singer was an act of "stupidity" and has said many of his pals have already mocked him after her was revealed as Doughnuts.

The former footballer, 42, revealed his identity on Saturday's edition of the singing contest and claimed stepping up to take a penalty in the World Cup is no sweat compared to singing dressed up as a giant doughnut.

Michael, who played for clubs including Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle United throughout a successful career, said he felt more nervous on the ITV show as he is "useless" at singing.

Speaking to MailOnline, the star said: "I wasn't the nervous type. If it's football, I could play in front of one person or a million.

"But when you are absolutely useless at something like I was in this, then it takes an awful lot of stupidity and courage to go and do it.

"When I was about to walk through to that stage and I could just see masses of people, cameras and lights. I literally went numb."

Michael's last song on the show turned out to be the noughties track Everybody Get Up by 5ive.

He revealed his costume was a nod towards his kids who would call him a doughnut if he did something stupid.

The former striker also said he hoped his appearance on the light-hearted show would help him to shift his tag of being boring.

"I can have a laugh with the best of them," he said.

Elsewhere on this weekend's show Jaime Winstone was unveiled as Firework.

She confessed she lied her Hollywood star dad Ray Winstone and had to cover her tracks so he didn’t clock she was on the show.

"Mum and Dad will be most surprised, they have no idea," she laughed after her elimination.

"I told them I was shooting a short film set in the future."

Jaime was surprised her pal Rita Ora didn't guess it was her inside the costume.

The pair are longtime pals and judge Rita looked shocked when the mask came off. Jaime said during the reveal: "I can't believe you didn't guess me Rita!"

Giving their final guesses, Jonathan suggested it could be Danny Dyer, to many laughs from the audience, whilst Davina was convinced it was Jennifer Lawrence. Mo Gilligan gave his guess as Dani Dyer while Rita said it was Jamelia.
