Michael Obafemi's one-word tweet following omission from Stephen Kenny's Ireland squad

Michael Obafemi has tweeted the word 'surprised' following his omission from Stephen Kenny's Republic of Ireland squad.

Kenny named his first ever Ireland senior squad earlier today and the Southampton striker is not a part of it.

Seven attackers have been named among the 24 players. They are Callum Robinson, Callum O’Dowda,  James McClean, Aaron Connolly, Adam Idah, Troy Parrott and Shane Long

Idah has been promoted to the senior squad for the Nations League games against Bulgaria and Finland, as has Jayson Molumby.

Both of them were star turns in Kenny’s Ireland Under-21 team.

Obafemi scored four goals for Southampton in all competitions last season, including three in the Premier League.

He has one senior cap, having played in a 0-0 draw with Denmark in 2018.

The Irish squad gathers in Dublin this Sunday evening and will train on Monday and Tuesday before departing for Sofia ahead of the game on September 3.

The Boys in Green then host the Finns at Aviva Stadium on September 6 and both games are behind-closed-doors.
