Michael Obafemi linked with loan move away from Southampton

Swansea City are hopeful of signing Southampton striker Michael Obafemi on loan.

The Swans are determined to bolster their forward options in the January transfer window in a bid to strengthen their promotion hopes.

And they are aiming to sign Obafemi on a temporary deal until the end of the season.

Reports have suggested the Saints are willing to offload the Ireland international to let him get some much-needed game time under his belt.

Steve Cooper could now make the 20-year-old his first signing of the winter window.

Obafemi has made two first team appearances for Ralph Hasenhüttl's side this season, with the first coming in the Carabao Cup against Brentford and the most recent being in a 1-0 Premier League win over Burnley in September.

Swansea already have five loan players in their ranks, and EFL rules dictate that only five loan men can feature in any given matchday squad.

And while it is not a necessity, it means one of Swansea's current loan stars could well depart this month.

Championship rivals Stoke City have also been credited with showing an interest in Obafemi.
