Michael O'Neill to become Stoke City's new manager after 'accepting' four-year deal

Michael O’Neill is set to become Stoke City's new manager.

The Northern Ireland boss has agreed in principle to join the struggling Championship club on a four-year contract, according to the Athletic.

Stoke are now negotiating a six-figure compensation deal with the Irish FA, with O'Neill set to almost double his £750,000 salary at the association.

The 50-year-old is expected to to be at Oakwell on Saturday for Stoke's crunch basement clash with Barnsley.

O'Neill will take charge of Northern Ireland for next week's Euro 2020 qualifiers against Holland and Germany.

They host the Dutch in Belfast on Saturday, November 16 before travelling to Frankfurt to face Germany three days later.

If Northern Ireland reach the Euro 2020 playoffs next March it is unlikely he will have any involvement with the international squad.

The Irish FA confirmed on Thursday that Stoke had made an official approach for O'Neill.

In a statement, the association said:  "The Irish Football Association has been approached by EFL Championship club Stoke City who are seeking permission to speak to Michael O'Neill about their vacant manager's position."

It appears the Potters have moved quickly to land their man, with the deal coming just six days after they sacked Nathan Jones.

Stoke have won just two of their opening 10 matches in the Championship this season.

When asked about speculation linking him with Stoke on Wednesday, O'Neill said: “It is always flattering. It is better to be linked than not linked, let’s be honest.

“It it is not a distraction for me. It is something that has been ongoing for a number of years, and the focus has been on preparing for next week’s games.

“As I have always said, if and when a situation arises, then you look at that scenario at that moment in time. But right now, my focus is obviously on the two games that lie ahead.”
