Michael O'Neill planning Stoke City return following positive Covid-19 test

Michael O'Neill could be back in the dugout for Stoke City's Championship return on June 20.

The former Northern Ireland manager is currently in self-isolation after testing positive for Covid-19.

O'Neill has been working remotely with his players and coaching staff as they prepare for next Saturday's game against Reading.

The 50-year-old tested positive for coronavirus shortly before a scheduled practice match against Manchester United on Tuesday.

It is understood O'Neill is recovering well after reporting no symptoms.

Stoke coach Rory Delap revealed O'Neill had been keeping a close eye on first-team affairs despite having to isolate at his Cheshire home.

“He has watched a training session live on video from home and was on the phone to (assistant manager) Billy McKinlay straight afterwards," Delap said.

“He’s sorted out the next day’s training - picking the teams for short-sided games and what have you - and has also been in touch with some of the lads too.

“With modern technology, you can be away, but still have your eyes on everybody.

“In fact, he can probably see more from watching on the video than he can stood on the touchline at ground level.”

Delap says O'Neill intends to be in charge of first-team affairs at next Saturday's game against Reading.

“As I understand it he’s got to isolate on his own for a week," Delap added.

"So if all goes well he will hopefully be back in the training ground some time next week and then be in charge of the team for the first game at Reading.”
